8:30 Tee Time

For the past 10 years I could think of no better career than to be a golf course architect. Somewhere inbetween then and now I thought I could make a golf course that people would love to play - more than almost any other course.

It appears as if we have succeeded grandly!

It is late and I still have a great big grin on my face.
I will share more this week about my first time around the 1/2 open course.

Sand to build with....

Building a golf course in sand, like the above image, would be about 100 times easier than on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Yes we had some sandy loam and did harvest sand for plating from the site, and I still dream to build a course in the sand. Why?
Easier to drain - I wouldn't need drainage on the site picture I posted yesterday - which is the same as above. Dig a hole and there is a bunker.
Shaping in sand would be like using a steak knife in melted butter vs. a plastic spork on a tough steak. It is that much of a struggle to shape clay - it can be done, but not easiliy and certainly not fast.
The site has already set itself up to drain and I think I could build the course without any earthwork - why the routing is so important.
I will get my chance one day, even if I have to buy the land myself.

Preliminary Golf Routing

Recently I had the opportunity to talk to someone about a new potential site - see above picture. It looks perfect to me. Unfortunately a few months later it looks like interest is waning - so if anyone else would be interested take a look at the following routing and give me a call - I may have a good partner for you.
(p.s. the routing was created without visiting - so very preliminary)

2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17

This is how it started. There has been a little play on Wolf Point over the last 10 days.
#5 isn't as ready as the others, but it makes for a great connector.

There have been some great comments so far - our client thinks it is great.
I haven't been there since - I've been traveling and will share some images from my travels.
I will also report some detailed comments and what it is like to play some holes first hand soon....

What are these?

After recouping from the show - I had to buckle down and get out a small proposal. As it has been a while since I featured an animal shot - can anyone guess what these are? I didn't get close to them to take the picture for a reason.

Rosalita

My client likes to make a little fun of me from time to time. Often he suggests putting some flamingos on a small island in the lake, but usually it centers around the fact that I grew up in New Jersey. Tonight I embraced my New Jersey history -- we went to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band tonight.

It is pretty amazing to see that many people singing and dancing and that happy all at one time. They played Born to Run with the lights on -- very, very cool. I couldn't help but think how long it would take for that many people to enjoy playing Wolf Point. It could take one hundred years. I think it just might.

My ears are still ringing, but I did walk out of the concert singing Oohhhhoohoho Thunder Road.

Beautiful II

The views near the 12th tee (above) are more and more stunning each visit. The golf course looked like waves reflecting the setting sun.

The 2nd Green - The Dictator

The most dictating green on the course is the second. The second fairway is also one of the widest on the course. Depending on hole location the ideal approach shot should be hit from either the right or left edge of the fairway. So the hole can dictate a 75 yard difference in the optimum approach spot. I pitched a bunch of balls to the green from the middle of the fairway just about 60 yards out - it was definate proof of the holes strategy. Here is an older picture - thankfully now committed to the archives.

Spring Has Sprung

The Live Oaks are blooming and the greens are thumping when hit with approach shots.
